Address: McKnight and 15 St NE. (between Deerfoot and Barlow)
Gordie’s Review (2 years old): Like to get the pinecones!
Age Range: All ages
Park Area: The park area has some large rocks, evergreen trees and mulch. There is also a deep ditch that some kids find entertaining to run up and down but it can be full of water or garbage.
Shade: There is some shade in the park area on the south end of the airplane watching area.
Seating: There are picnic tables along the runway and some benches and picnic tables in the park area.
Stroller/wheelchair access: There is a pathway into the park area. The picnic tables along the runway are on top of asphalt.
Overall assessment: My husband loves watching and taking pictures of airplanes taking off and landing so we end up at this spot quite often. There is a Tim Horton/Wendy’s nearby so you can get some take-out and have a picnic even if you didn’t think ahead and pack a lunch. It’s even a nice spot when it’s cold because the parking lot faces the runway so you can watch from the comfort of your car.
This is probably the best spot in the city to see airplanes land and take off.
You can also look at http://yyc.com to check out when the planes will be landing to help you plan your trip.
Yes, we have taken the boys there and they like it! I also love to take pics of the planes, I find them fascinating!
How do you get to this place? Google maps doesn’t show a great view like the ones you have in the picture with the airplanes and park benches. Is it possible if you put the directions on how to get there?
Hint if you are at the viewing area for a specific flight. Airplanes on this runway are either coming from or going to the west. The new runway handles all traffic going to or coming from the east. So if you want the kids to see Grandma’s airplane coming from Toronto, this viewing area will not do the trick.
