Gymnasium
The Rocky Ridge YMCA has three gymnasiums, with drop-in activities such as, open gym times, pickle ball, basketball and badminton.
Rocky Ridge Public Library Location
The Calgary Public Library has a mini location inside the YMCA facility. This can be accessed without paying admission. This is a small, primarily self serve location with a small kids play area, and a small selection of books. You can also pick up holds placed at this location.
My kids were thrilled to be able to pick up a few books after we went swimming.
Rock Climbing
Occasional drop-in climbing sessions are available. Auto-belays are used and participants must be at least 4 years old and a waiver is required.
Public Skating
There is a leisure ice surface and an NHL sized rink that have drop-in times for things like public skating, shinny and youth sticks and pucks. CSA approved helmets (hockey, ski/snowboard only) are required for both adults and kids. Check for the sticker CSA sticker on your helmets before you arrive to make sure they will qualify.
Aquatic Centre
The aquatic centre has a 8 lane 25m lap pool, a wave pool, water slide with a run off, amenity pool with lazy river and climbing wall attached and spray area with slide.
Our Review
We went to the aquatic centre one morning during a shared use time with swimming lessons. This was an error on my part as the amenity pool was still quite busy and none of the lap pool or the wave pool was available for public swimming.
Unlike many wave pools in Calgary, the pool at Rocky Ridge is not connected to any of the other pool spaces. The nice thing about this is that there will not be any waves in the amenity pool.
The amenity pool has shallow areas so it doubles as a tot pool. If your little one doesn’t like the spray features they may find this whole area a little overwhelming.
The climbing wall and lazy river were a lot of fun but there are a lot of choke points so it’s hard to really swim in the amenity pool if it is busy.
My daughter says the water slide was super fun (minimum height requirement of 40 inches, solo riders only). The set up of the hot tub is nice and open.
The ceilings in the pool are nice and high, however, I did find the air to be a bit chilly.
Overall, we had a nice time, although I wouldn’t go during lessons again. The pool has a lot to offer for the whole family.
