Capitol Hill Dinosaur Playground

Location    map

Community: Capitol Hill – 20th Avenue and 15th St. NW.
Parking: free street parking

Nicky’s Review (6): “I really liked the saucer swing and the treehouse”
Robbie’s Review: “I liked the swings and the fossils”

Age Range: 18 months-10 years
Ground Cover: pea gravel

Features: 6 swings (2 saucer, 2 baby); Gazebo climber with double slide; climber with dinosaur bone features, slide and double slide and wobbly bridge; large spider web climber.

Surrounding Park Area: Playground is located on the grounds of the Capitol Hill Community Association.  It is bordered by 14th St on one side and 20th Ave on the other but with fencing and bushes all around you can hardly tell.  There is a baseball diamond and lots of grass to run in or kick a ball around.  Bushes adjacent to the playground would provide an excellent setting for hide-and-seek or playing “house”.

Shade: Lots of shade from trees and bushes surrounding the playground and shade from the play structures themselves.
Seating: a few benches and picnic tables

Accessibility: There is an accessible path into the park. Kids who are able to be transferred and carried or walk with assistance for a few steps would then be able to enjoy the saucer swings and the gazebo climber.

Overall Assessment:

This is one of my favorite playgrounds. It’s well thought out and has a great theme. I often favor playgrounds with accessible flooring, but this playground shows how you can make a great playground with pea gravel.

The Dinosaur theme gives the playground a name that will become instantly recognizable. It also provides unique imaginative play opportunities.

The playground also provides twin slides to encourage cooperative side-by side play and a ‘store front’ with two different features that help incorporate the pea gravel into the play. Since this playground opened, it has become very popular – it is definitely worth a trip.

  1. Great park – but the address is wrong on your website… it is actually at 15th Street (not 19th Street) on 20th Ave.

    Thanks for the excellent website!!

  2. Visited for the first time today, but slides were missing (3 areas had boards across them). Hopefully they come back as they’d enhance the playground. Kids enjoyed the rest of it though!
