Highlights: We visited the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame while visiting Red Deer for the weekend, but it would also be a great place to stop on the way to or from Edmonton as it doesn’t require a long visit and has great access off of the highway.

The museum was way more fun than I had expected. There are tons of opportunities for kids (and grown-ups!) to play and try out different things related to sports.

When you first walk in, there is an interactive set up that lets you try to play things like hockey, football and soccer against the screen. It’s a little tricky to get the screen to respond like you would expect but you get to use real equipment.

You can also try your hand at putting on a little golf green. My daughter thought this was awesome.

Just beside the putting green in an endless climbing wall – it keeps turning as you climb. It can be a little tricky so you may want to get one of the helpful staff to show you how it works if you want to try it out.

You can also try a number of small games from the First Nations.

One of the highlights for my son (6) was the press box. They had reels from three different sports that you could watch and record yourself as the announcer. They also had the actual audio clip so you can compare what they did to what you did.

You can also try wheelchair racing – you can race against a friend or against the time of a real race.

The Winter sport area is attractively decorated with lots to see and touch.

My kids liked sitting in the bobsleigh especially.

In addition, they also have informative exhibits about the history of sports in Alberta.

And of course the Alberta Hall of Fame itself.

Our family had a great time at the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame. If you are passing through Red Deer it makes a perfect stop, it’s fairly inexpensive, the kids get a chance to be physical but it won’t add a long time onto your trip.
