Katie visited Lethbridge to see what they had to offer for families. Here’s one of the great playgrounds she found!
Location: 245 McMaster Blvd West (it’s a short walk from the parking lot to the playground, on a paved path around the lake)
Nicholas Sheran Park is built around a man-made lake. There’s an edible orchard, a disc golf course, and a really awesome playground with a train / coal mine theme. The playground has a lovely location right next to the lake, restrooms, and a picnic shelter.
The playground has two climbing structures. One is more suitable for toddlers, and the other is better for bigger kids. Both have climbable trains. The larger structure also has a train station with ticket windows, which is great for imaginative play.
There are also two large disc swings and a little rocker that looks like a coal truck.
If your kids get tired, there are a couple of signs with kid-friendly information about trains and coal-mining in the area. I liked that the theme of the playground was based on local history.
One of the coolest features of this playground was the fact parts of it are wheelchair-accessible. The groundcover is solid rubber, and a section of the large climber is accessible by a wide ramp. The ramp leads to the train station and a “cart” that can be rocked back and forth.
There’s also a smaller “train” on the ground, which a wheelchair could maneuver into.
Overall, this playground was a huge hit with the kids. If you bring a picnic, you could easily spend half a day at Nicholas Sheran Park!
