Wings and Wheels – Father’s Day Weekend at The Hangar

Each year The Hangar Flight Museum kicks off their summer season with a fantastic Wings and Wheels Father’s Day event. They invited us to attend this year, and I’m so glad we went.

My kids love it when they are able to go inside airplanes and at this event, several of their vintage aircraft are open for visitors.

My personal favorite is probably the Avro Lancaster MK X. Going inside is a really impressive experience.

There are a ton of staff and volunteers available at this event too who are happy to talk about the aircraft, provide information and tell stories which really makes the experience special.

In addition to the airplane tours, they also have a car show.

My kids really liked seeing the Hudson Hornet this year – just like the Hudson Hornet from Disney’s Cars.

Some of the cars can be found inside the airplane hangars but most are outside on the lawn.

They make for some pretty fun photo ops too.

The Hangar brings in a food truck for this event – for 2019, it was Kiss My Grits. They had a special kids menu which was super helpful. And their regular menu was delicious.

In the main building upstairs they had a craft for the kids. It was actually pretty cool, they built a little paper rocket which you shot up with a straw.

A couple of other groups had displays at the event too.

Roots 2 Stem had a flight simulator set up.

The Western Canadian Robotics Society uses space at the Hangar for their club meetings each week. They had little projects that you could buy and create right there. My older two kids really enjoyed doing one of the projects.

The gift shop is a great place to pick up a father’s day gift too.

Tips

  • Saturday is less busy than Sunday
  • Closed toe shoes are required to enter the aircraft
  • Helmets and gloves may be required (these will be provided)
  • There is a great nursing area inside the woman’s washroom

Overall, it was a really great and we will definitely be putting it in our calendar for next year. After Father’s Day, The Hangar Flight Museum hosts Now Boarding – open aircraft days on the weekend all summer long!
