Calgary has many world class attractions that certainly deserve the attention that they are given. On this list though you will find other excellent attractions that you may have overlooked but are definitely worth a visit.
1. YouthLink Calgary Police Interpretive Centre
The Police Interpretive Centre has been opened since the fall of 2015 and is open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays with no admission charge (more days during the summer). It is beautifully displayed and engaging for kids of all ages.
Some exhibits do have strong content – if that is a concern for your family you are asked to check with the front desk. This is my pick for Calgary’s most underrated museum.
2. Bow Habitat Station
The Bow Habitat Station and Fish hatchery is a surprisingly engaging place to visit. In includes aquariums that feature fish that live in the various habitats in Alberta and a beautiful interpretive centre. You can also get a tour of the fish hatchery for an additional cost.
3. Canadian Wilds at the Calgary Zoo
The Canadian Wilds are often passed by in favor of the more exotic animals like monkeys and tigers but they are just as interesting. It’s not very often that kids get to see animals like wolves, bison and bears right up close.
4. Fort Calgary
Fort Calgary is a beautiful small museum about Calgary’s early history. They have really made an effort to make the museum appeal to kids as well as adults.
5. Inglewood Bird Sanctuary
At his 36 hectare nature reserve, you can get a huge dose of nature right in the middle of the city. You can find a huge number of birds as well as other animals – even deer! The Bird Sanctuary was heavily damaged in the recent floods but a large portion has now reopened.
6. The Hangar Flight Museum
With many full-sized aircraft on display, Calgary’s aerospace museum is a great place for airplane fans.
7. Military Museums
The Military Museums is dedicated to educating the public about Canada’s navy, army, and air force. The museum is huge and you would be hard pressed to get through everything on one visit.
8. Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame and Museum at COP
Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame and Museum is beautifully presented and very engaging for kids with interactive stations throughout the museum. Even if you are not a sports fan you will probably enjoy this museum.
